EPA Monitoring Dust at Casino Construction Site

Buffalo, NY – The Environmental Protection Agency is taking air samples in the neighborhood near the site of the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino site.
The EPA air monitoring began over the weekend at the request of Erie County officials, concerned that dust from the demolition of the old H-O Oats grain elevator at the site may be presenting asbestos hazards to nearby residents. County Attorney Laurence Rubin says nothing is being done about keeping the dust levels down.
"The Senecas have known about this. They've done nothing. The contractors have known about this. They've done nothing," Rubin said. "We hope there's not a significant problem, but we won't know that until the EPA is done with its testing."
But the Senecas say their contractor has been conducting ongoing air quality monitoring since demolition began, and that no concerns have been raised.
