Williams Says Remedial Classes Will Be Offered for Lower Grades

By Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – Plans to end so-called social promotion in Buffalo high schools will be extended to the elementary school level next year.

Schools Superintendent James Williams met with parents Monday to answer questions about the Commencement Academies, which will begin providing remedial math and language skills this fall for high school freshmen.

Williams is now planning to provide summer classes from pre-K through grade 3 in 2006. The superintendent noted that 65 percent of Buffalo kindergartners are unprepared for first grade, and that the problem compounds in following years.
