Groundbreaking for new Ss. Columba and Brigid Church

By Anthea Passmore

Buffalo, NY – In more ways than one, a groundbreaking event took place Tuesday at the Parish of Saints Columba and Brigid in Buffalo.

The congregation witnessed the breaking of the ground at the site of their new church 14 months since the fire that caused damage beyond repair. For a parish that has been homeless since April 2004, the ground breaking event at the site of their new home was surrounded by smiling faces. Pastor Father Roy Herberger reflected that although the church experienced extensive damage, it has allowed for a period of regeneration.

"The church building has been destroyed. But that doesn't matter. We are the church," Herberger said. "If we have to, we can worship God in this parking lot."

There was great excitement amongst clergy and parishioners that many artifacts salvaged from the devastated church including stained glass windows and the church bell have been incorporated into the design of the new building.

The new church and parish center is anticipated to be complete by next Spring.
