United Way Commits $12 Million for Community Programs in 2005-2006

By Harold Sherrell

Buffalo, NY – The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County will spend a total of $12 million in the coming year on the various community programs the agency funds. The money will target programs for the young, the elderly and families -- all considered to be "key impact areas" by the United Way.

Agency President Arlene Kaukus said it's becoming more of a challenge to meet the community's needs.

"We find ourselves in a position as an organization of needing to do very good forecasting as to what we expect to be able to raise in community care dollars and make commitments against that," Kaukus said. "We stand proud that we are able to commit $12 million for services in Western New York."

This year's commitment by the United way represents an increase of nearly $500,000 over last year.
