County Personnel Commissioner Prepares for Unthinkable -- Running Out of Cash

By Joyce Kryszak

Buffalo, NY – Erie County legislators face yet another deadline Tuesday. The County Legislature meets in a special session. But there is still no consensus on how they will deal with a $118 million deficit in the current year's budget. Legislature Chairman George Holt is pushing for an increase in the sales tax. Without a new source of revenue, Holt says the county will most certainly face the imposition of a state control board.

But the Commissioner of Personnel says there's a lot more riding on this one than just an increase in the sales tax. John Greenan says the county is about to run out of money and he honestly doesn't know what happens next.
