Buffalo Science Museum Unveils "Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys"

By Jillian Bannister

Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Museum of Science gave the media and some students a sneak peak at its new exhibit Thursday.

"Springs, Sprockets, and Pulleys: The Mechanical Sculptures of Steve Gerberich" doesn't open until Saturday, but some excited 5th graders from the Buffalo Science Magnet School had a chance to explore the wonders of mechanical art. Their teacher, Sharon Pykle, says this exhibit is a chance for children to see how objects from the past can be reused to bring others joy.

"We have so few opportunities with the curriculum constraints we have for kids to really show their imagination. This is an opportunity for them to see that there are no limits. There are possibilities that are bound in everything," Pykle said. "What looks like nonsense for one, turns out to be a treasure for somebody else, and that's what they're seeing. They're seeing people's imagination being able to spark curiosity and thinking."

The exhibit officially opens on Saturday, and will run through June 26th.
