Snow, Freezing Rain Sweep Through Region

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – A winter storm that moved through the region late Wednesday evening and Thursday morning dumped as much as seven inches of snow on parts of the Southern Tier. Snow fall totals in the immediate Buffalo area were in the three to four inch range.

The snow then changed to freezing rain, forcing many school districts in the Southtowns and Southern Tier to close.

The National Weather Service continued a Winter Storm Warning for Southern Erie, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties Thursday afternoon. A Winter Weather Advisory remained in effect for Buffalo and areas north.

Meteorologist Mike Pukajlo says the Southern Tier counties experienced an eighth- to a quarter-inch of icing from freezing rain. He said up to a half-inch of icing was possible in isolated areas.
