Buffalo, NY – The goal is to collect 1,000 turkeys in 18 days. That's the Buffalo City Mission's challenge to Western New Yorkers with Thanksgiving fast approaching.
According to the Mission's executive director, Tom McLaughlin, this is the first time that such a goal has been set. He says that in the past, they have simply asked people to help out anyway they can.
"I thought if we put a numerical goal to it, we could shoot for that (1,000 turkeys)," McLaughlin said. "We could say that we got a thousand turkeys before Thanksgiving, and we're good for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. We think this gives people something they can focus on."
The City Mission says it will deliver nearly 2,000 dinners to shut-ins, serve hundreds of meals at its shelters and supply food baskets to low-income families this holiday season.
