School Board May Have Violated State's Open Meetings Law

Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Board of Education is accused of violating the state's open government law.

Board members met behind closed doors last week to discuss an offer for funding a national search for a superintendent. The school board did vote to go into executive session to discuss an offer made by M & T Bank President Robert Wilmers to pay for the search. The decision to discuss it behind closed doors was based on contractual and personnel issues.

But according to a report in the Buffalo News, contract and personnel provisions to allow executive session did not apply. The report cites executive director of the state's Committee on Open Government as saying he believes the board was in violation.
