Auditors Review Buffalo Diocese's Compliance with Clergy Abuse Regulations

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Independent auditors will arrive at the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo Monday to make sure it remains in compliance with regulations protecting children from clergy abuse.

Last September, auditors from the Gavin Group of Boston found the Catholic Diocese was in full compliance with what's known as the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The charter was enacted in the wake of the clergy abuse scandal that gripped the Catholic Church two years ago.

Diocesan officials say more than 12,000 people who work with children have taken a course on providing children with a safe environment. They're also required to sign and abide by a 19-point code of conduct.

Diocesan Administrator Bishop Edward Grosz said he wants to make sure the diocese remains in compliance with the charter. The auditors are expected to be here through Friday examining the diocese's policies and procedures.
