Buffalo School Board Elections Underway

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – It is an important day for the Buffalo Board of Education. All nine district board seats are up for re-election. Polls opened at 6am Tuesday and will remain open for city voters through 9pm. Buffalo school district spokesman Andrew Maddigan says this is one of the more important election years for the Board of Education.

"Once every 15 years we have a situation where there are all nine seats up for election, and this year is one of those situations," Maddigan said. "Eight are being contested. Only one, in the North district, is not. However, it does represent a great deal of opportunity for change."

Maddigan says it's too hard to predict voter turnout for today, but noted that in past years, participation has been low.

Monday night, the School Board appeared at Common Council budget hearings. The district was hoping for more funding from the city in the coming year, but the Mayor is proposing the same level as this year.
