Defense Says Rigases Repaid Some Adelphia Debt

New York City, NY – Defense attorneys in the fraud trial of John Rigas and his two sons attempted to show Tuesday that the family repaid or planned to pay some Adelphia debt.
Defense attorneys questioned James Helms, a former Adelphia treasury supervisor. Helms was asked about an internal document that indicates the company shifted more than $45 million in debt to other Rigas businesses. That debt was created by the family's personal spending.
Helms also told the court that Tim Rigas did pay back Adelphia for some of the payments on his condo in Colorado. A check reveals that 50-percent of the condo down payment Adelphia made was repaid, as well as some other condo payments.
Helms -- a government witness -- is testifying in exchange for immunity.
