Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Board of Education Wednesday night approved a plan requesting that the school system create more charter schools.
It is called the Renaissance Project Schools Initiative. The proposal calls for a wide range of district-sponsored charter schools across the city.
Board President Jack Coyle said there is some confusion about charter schools.
"There is a misconception that Charter Schools are not public schools. I think it is harmful at times," said Coyle. "I think what we are trying to do is, given all our restraints, is figure out if we can we provide more with the dollars we are receiving. And we think there is a way."
Coyle said city-sponsored charter schools will be a boost to students.
The school board plans to solicit proposals from interested parties for the plan, being called the Renaissance Project Schools Initiative.
