Albany, NY – Parents will soon be urged like never before to take an active role in their children's education.
Starting next month, the state will phase in its parental involvement program that will include workshops run through church and parent groups and a CD-ROM giving parents tips on getting involved or more involved in schools.
The state has already published a source book for parents and schools, held training sessions for teachers and coordinated parent involvement efforts.
In August, the New York City Department of Education hired 1,200 parent coordinators as part of its efforts to reform the nation's largest public school system.
Coordinators will act as a liaison between parents, teachers, school officials and community organizations.
