Schumer Calls for Background Checks on Truck Drivers

By Joyce Kryszak

Buffalo, NY – U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is urging the office of Homeland Security to implement a plan to prevent commercial trucks from being used in future terrorist attacks.

The New York Democrat was in Buffalo Monday outlining his plan. It includes background checks on all drivers, putting tracking technology in all trucks carrying hazardous materials and installing kill switches that could shut off hijacked trucks.

Schumer says Western New York is especially vulnerable with about five million unsecured trucks passing through Buffalo each year.
