Senecas Choose Cheektowaga Site for Second Casino

By Howard Riedel

Cattaraugus Reservation, NY – The Seneca Nation of Indians has chosen Cheektowaga as the site for its second casino.

The Tribal Council voted Thursday night in favor of a 70-acre site off Sonwil Drive near the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

Governor Pataki must still approve the choice. Mayor Masiello said that he will continue to try to convince the governor that Buffalo is a better location for a casino.

Tribal Council Chairman Barry Snyder cited good relationships with town leaders as a factor in their choice of Cheektowaga, saying Buffalo had its chance for a casino but vetoed the tribe's preferred choices of the Buffalo Convention Center or a waterfront site.

The Senecas are entitled to a third site under their compact with the state, and Snyder says that might be placed on the Allegany Reservation near Salamanca.
