Fiscal Control Board to Meet Tuesday

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo's Fiscal Stability Authority will hold it's first meeting Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Kleinhan's Music Hall.

Board Chairman Thomas Baker said tomorrow's session will be an organizational meeting.

He said it is a chance to begin to review duties and responsibilities listed under the approved state legislation that created the board.

Baker said the meeting will be opened to the public. Citizens will be allowed to listen to the session.

"Under the Authority laws, a forum such as this will need to be opened to the public," said Baker. "But it is not meant to be a town meeting with a dialogue between the public sector and committee."

"It is truly is the committee's meeting."

Baker said he is disappointed to hold the first meeting without the ninth and final member still too be named by the State Legislature.

But last Friday, a spokesman for Assembly Majority Leader Paul Tokasz said they're hoping to name the final member by Tuesday.

Baker said they will need to continue reviewing the extensive legislation to figure out how the board will be financed.

He said he does not have a "definitive" view on how that will happen.

"I'm told the money is there to run an efficient staff and go about our business," said Baker. "But I'm not sure that I know the exact aspects, if you will, of that."

Baker said they first need to get a handle on the extent of the board's authority - then in the "not to distance future" they will begin the business of evaluating the city's situation and begin the task of trying to figure out how to deal with Buffalo's deep fiscal crisis.
