Music Notes: 25 Years of Carillon Concerts

A summer tradition in Williamsville celebrates its silver anniversary.By Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – A favorite summertime concert series celebrates its 25th anniversary. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

Don't try driving down Milton Street in Williamsville on Wednesday evenings. It's blocked off. Instead, pull out your lawn chair and listen to the carillon at Calvary Episcopal Church. Resident Carilloneur Gloria Werblow says the concerts have become more popular over the 25 years.

Gloria Werblow is the resident carilloneur at Calvary Episcopal Church, home to the Carillon concert series Wednesday nights at 7?p.m. through August 13th. This week's installment (7/9) features carilloneur Tin-Shi Tam and Guitarist Mir Ali. The series will take a break on July?16th for Old Home Days in Williamsville.

The organist at Calvary Episcopal is helping to launch a new summer series for choral music fans. The UB Music Department is sponsoring a summer reading Chorus the next four Wednesdays at 8?p.m. in Baird Hall on UB's North Campus. Debi Overton will direct Vivaldi's Gloria this week. It's an opportunity to meet other singers, experience different conductors, try new music, and enjoy some air conditioning. Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem will be featured on future weeks. For more information, call 645-2921.

Also this week, the Amherst Saxophone Quartet gives a free lunchtime concert Wednesday (7/9) at noon on One M?and?T Plaza downtown.

The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas is in concert Tuesday (7/8) at 7:30 in Amherst's Bassett Park, then Sunday (7/13) at 7?p.m. in Cheektowaga Town Park.

The Clarence Summer Symphony begins its season Sunday (7/13) at 7?p.m. in Clarence Town Park with an all-American concert, featuring clarinetist and saxophonist Sal Andolina. Music Director Arie Lipsky is my guest next week on Music?Notes.

Ron Spigelman leads the Buffalo Philharmonic in a free concert Tuesday (7/8) at 7?p.m. along Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo, then for a ticketed performance Saturday (7/12) at 7:30?p.m. at Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

Finally, the Chautauqua Ballet joins the Chautauqua Symphony Tuesday (7/8) at 8:15?p.m. in the Amphitheatre. Learn about Thursday's (7/10) and Saturday's (7/12) CSO concerts on the Chautauqua web site. The Chautauqua Opera gives the final performance of Puccini's La?Boheme tonight (Monday, 7/7) at 7:30?p.m.
