Rally to Save AmeriCorps Program

Buffalo, NY – Local AmeriCorps members gathered for a "Save AmeriCorps" rally Monday in West Seneca. A proposed cut in federal funding threatens the future of the local program.
Sr. Mary Johnice is the director of St. Adelbert's Response to Love Center, which assists the needy on Buffalo's East Side. She says that AmeriCorps members pick-up food and bring it to her pantry.
"They're learning how to work, they're learning how to bond with human service organizations, and one day they may be the people running those organizations," Sr. Johnice said. "They're being educated to help people. They're not in it for themselves, they're sacrificial people who are helping others, and that's what the world is all about."
Both Congressman Jack Quinn of Hamburg and US Senator Charles Schumer of New York say they both support restoring funds for AmeriCorps.
