Buffalo, NY – Five of the so-called Lackawanna Six defendants may soon plead guilty as part of plea deals.
The Buffalo News cites federal court sources that say negotiations have been ongoing for several weeks. The six Lackawanna residents have been jailed since September on charges of helping al-Qaida terrorists.
One of the six, Faysal Galab, pled guilty in January in a plea deal.
As WBFO News reported earlier this week, a bail hearing for Sahim Alwan, one of the other five, has been postponed three times in recent weeks. That has sparked the plea deal speculation.
A Yemeni-American civic leader in Buffalo charged with running an illegal money transferring business says none of the money sent to Yemen went toward terrorist activities. In federal court Thursday, businessman Mohamed Albanna says he can prove the money transfers were received only by family members for whom they were intended.
