You're invited to help sing Handel's Messiah at UB.By Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – Don't just listen to Handel's Messiah this holiday season. You're invited to help sing it. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

The Slee Sinfonietta presents a seasonal concert Thursday (12/5) at 8 p.m. in Slee Hall. The annual Messiah Sing-In makes up the second half, while Conductor Magnus Martensson says the first half features a Soprano from the Slovak republic, Ingrid Smolinska.

Magnus Martensson will be on the podium leading the Slee Sinfonietta Thursday (12/5) at 8 p.m. in Slee Hall on UB's North Campus. UB's Choral Director Harold Rosenbaum will share the conducting duties for Messiah. The UB Choir, Chorus, and Symphony will be joining in and you're invited to lend your voice as well. Scores will be available at Slee.

Other student ensembles are also performing at UB. The schedule is available from the Slee Hall web site.

The Buffalo Philharmonic will also be presenting Messiah this weekend. Guest Conductor Thomas Wilkins leads the BPO Chorus and soloists Saturday (12/7) at 8 p.m. and Sunday (12/8) at 2:30 p.m. in Kleinhans with pre-concert talks an hour earlier.

And time now for the yearly reminder. Remember to stand for the "Hallelujah Chorus" not necessarily out of religious reverence but because King George II stood during the first performance in Dublin. As a Music Notes listener, you're expected to be a leader in helping others continue this tradition.

More holiday music as Soprano Cheryl Hudson joins the Amherst Symphony and Conductor Steven Thomas Sunday (12/8) at 7 p.m. with a pre-concert talk at 7:15. That's in the Amherst Middle School on Kings Highway.

The Freudig Singers present the annual Christmas Pie concert with international carols and American pies afterwards. It takes place Friday (12/6) at 7:30 p.m. in the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church on South Buffalo. The concert will be repeated - minus dessert - on Sunday (12/8) at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Niagara University.

The Cheektowaga Community Chorus and Millennium Youth Chorus present a Candlelight Concert Sunday (12/8) at 7 p.m. in the Cleveland Heights Christian Church on Union Road.

The American Legion Band of the Tonawandas gives a holiday pops performance with Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride and other favorites Sunday (12/8) at 7:30 p.m. in North Tonawanda's Riviera Theatre.

The Divertimento Quintet present a work by Mozart and seasonal selections Friday at 12:30 p.m in Saint Paul's Cathedral.
