Judge Rules to Save Richardson Complex

By Dylan Hall

Buffalo, NY – A victory was won for preservationists of Buffalo's historic Richardson Complex.

State Supreme Court Judge John Michalik ruled that the state must repair the 130-year-old former Buffalo Psychiatric Center on Elmwood Avenue.

Local preservationist Tim Tielman said the ruling sets a precedent for the restoration of buildings across the state.

He said it determines that the state must maintain every building it owns listed on the State or National Historic Register.

State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt said after the complex is repaired, it could be occupied by Buffalo Olmsted School, Buffalo State College or private businesses.

Preservationists said stabilizing the deteriorating complex will cost about seven million dollars.
