Boys and Girls Clubs Receive $50,000 State Grant

By Lisa Litzinger

Buffalo, NY – The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Northtowns received a $50,000 state grant Monday. The money will be used for capital improvements at three of the organization's facilities in the city's Riverside section.

Gary Krasinski, who heads up the Northtowns Boys and Girls Clubs, says that the need for effective youth development programs has never been greater.

"This has been a great addition to the Boys and Girls Club of the Northtowns," Krasinski said. "I don't get down here as often as I want to be, but everyday I come down here we see -- after school -- 50, 60, 75 kids who have a safe place to go."

State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt was on hand to present the grant. He says that state assistance for such programs is especially appropriate because of the city's budget difficulties.

"I've been providing assistance to many youth organizations in the city of Buffalo because I think it is critically important that: A. we provide educational and recreational opportunities that keep them out of trouble in a supervised setting, and B. with the difficulty that the city of Buffalo is facing in terms of its budget, I think it is appropriate for the state to step in where it can to provide this assistance," Hoyt said.

Plans call for the construction of a new outdoor basketball court at one of the Riverside sites.
