Canisius Plans to Buy Blue Cross Blue Shield Complex

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Canisius College will purchase the Blue Cross Blue Shield complex adjacent to its campus for future expansion.

The college will acquire the building and its adjacent parking ramp for nearly $18.5 million. The purchase deal will be closed sometime between 2006 and 2009.

College Vice President John Hurley said plans call for converting the building into a comprehensive science center.

"We will consolidate at one location biology, plus psychology, biochemistry, chemistry and physics," Hurley said. "Then we'll also move over there mathematics, computer science and our bioinformatics program."

Hurley said Canisius hopes to complement at the undergraduate level some of the ground-breaking research UB is undertaking at its new Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics.

He said the lengthy timeline for completing the sale is needed to give Blue Cross Blue Shield the time to find a new location in Buffalo for its headquarters.
