First Case of Human West Nile Infection in Erie County

By Mark Wozniak

Buffalo, NY – The first human infection by the West Nile Virus has been reported in Erie County.

County Health Commissioner Anthony Billittier says a 70-year-old woman started showing symptoms of the virus in late August. She is currently recovering at home after treatment at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Cheektowaga.

Dr. Billittier says the chances of human infection are remote. But he urges residents to drain any stading water, where mosquitoes breed, and to report any dead crows to authorities.
