Carjacking Suspect Dead after Wild Chase in Hamburg

Hamburg, NY – An autopsy is expected to determine whether a carjacker died from injuries in a crash or from being shot.

The 34-year-old robbery suspect was killed and a police officer was injured as they struggled inside a carjacked vehicle that slammed into parked cars.

Hamburg police say Lieutenant Jim Koch fired a shot in the incident that began about 8:30 pm Monday. An autopsy by the Erie County medical examiner is expected to show whether Terrance Mason of Lackawanna died from the crash or from being shot.

Koch was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.

Mason had fled after stealing several leather jackets from a Sears store in the McKinley Mall.

Mason crashed into another vehicle a few miles away and then carjacked another vehicle. Koch jumped in and struggled with Mason.

The car went about three-quarters of a mile before crashing in the parking lot of a tavern.
