State Grant to Restore Three Tonawanda Cemeteries

By Dylan Hall

Tonawanda, NY – State Assemblyman Robin Schimminger Thursday presented a grant of $250,000 to the City of Tonawanda for the preservation of its three cemeteries. The historic cemeteries have fallen into disrepair over the years with falling tombstones, broken fencing and unmanaged plant growth.

Schimminger said the improvements are long overdue.

Cemeteries, of course, are places where we honor and pay respect to those who have gone before us," Schimminger said. "People who built this community of the Tonawandas are buried here. To pay them proper respect, it is fitting that we do something to enhance and preserve the ambiance of this place.

Planned improvements include the installation of new fencing, landscaping of the grounds, and gravestone cleaning and re-setting.
