Photographer Highlights Colored Musicians' Club

By Joyce Kryszak

Buffalo, Ny – Buffalo's nearly century old Colored Musicians Club is one of the earliest African American Musician's Unions in the country.

But the club, which has hosted some of the all time jazz greats, has existed in virtual obscurity.

From it's modest digs on Broadway, the Colored Musician's Club has welcomed such jazz legends as Dizzy Gelespie, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and many others.

And the top names in jazz today continue to stop by for an impromtu jam session with members of the club.

But many of those members are stars in their own right.

Local Photographer Rhea Anna did a series of portraits that put the spotlight on some of the club's current members.

Anna said that it was her admiration for them that drew her to this project.

WBFO's Joyce Kryszak talked with her about how she captured the personalities of these local music icons.

Anna's exhibit, featuring members of the Colored Musicians' Club is on view now through August 15, at Osaka's BLU Room on Main Street.
