Amherst, NY – A chartered school bus empty of passengers veered off the Youngmann Highway in Amherst Friday night and slammed into a tree, killing the driver.
The bus swerved through a culvert and a chain-link fence, knocking down traffic signs, then sideswiped a small tree before crashing into a larger oak tree. Amherst police say the driver, Robert Zulawski, 67, of Blasdell, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the Erie County Medical Center.
"We don't have any information as to where he was heading," said Amherst police Capt. Enzio Villalta.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation but "it would appear (there) may have been a medical condition involved," Villalta said in Saturday's Buffalo News.
