Cheektowaga Appoints First Female Police Chief

By Mark Scott

Cheektowaga, NY – The Cheektowaga Town Board Monday night appointed the area's first female Chief of Police.

Christine Ziemba will succeed Chief Bruce Chamberlin when he retires late next month. Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Dennis Gabryszak says it's an historic choice.

"It's historic not only because she's a woman, but because she's someone, whom through her career, has attained a number of firsts," Gabryszak said. "Lt. Ziemba was the first woman appointed to the Cheektowaga Police Department back in 1976. She worked her way up through the ranks. I know that she has earned the respect of her fellow police officers."

Ziemba has been a department lieutenant, overseeing its Crime Resistance Unit.
