BPO Features Violins This Week

Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concertmaster Charles Haupt talks about this week's Violin Concerto performance.By Bill Raffel, WBFO

Buffalo, NY – The Concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic will be featured in what's considered the classic American violin concerto. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.

Charles Haupt is the violinist who walks in right before a concert, leads the orchestra in tuning, and shakes hands with the conductor or soloist as a representative of his fellow musicians. Behind the scenes, he also determines how the first violinists will move their bows so they're all in synch, which also can influence all the other string players.

But this weekend Charles will stand in front of the orchestra as soloist in Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto, a work he describes as very lyrical.

See Charles Haupt perform Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto with the Buffalo Philharmonic Friday (2/15) at 7:30PM and Saturday (2/16) at 8PM in Kleinhans, with pre-concert talks an hour beforehand. Guest conductor Ronald Zollman will also lead Cesar Franck's Symphony in D Minor.

BPO members John Fullam and Glenn Einshschalg join pianist Dob Rebic in chamber works for clarinet and bassoon. That's in the Unity Church on Delaware Avenue Sunday (2/17) at 3:30PM. And, the Buffalo Philharmonic Chamber singers perform music for Valentine's Day in Lockport's Palace Theatre Saturday (2/16) at 8PM.

Also this week, the Amherst Symphony is in concert with guitar soloists Joanne Castellani and Michael Andriaccio. It takes place in the Amherst Middle School Auditorium Sunday (2/17) at 7PM with a pre-concert talk at 6:15.

The Portland String Quartet is in recital Monday (2/11) at 8PM in the Lancaster Opera House.

Violinist Moves Pogossian will perform Sonatas for two violins, joined by his wife Varty Manouelian. Works of Prokofiev, Bartok, and UB Composer Magnus Martensson will be featured Thursday (2/14) at 8PM in Slee Hall on UB's Amherst Campus.

Cellist Alexandre Bouzlov gives a free recital Sunday (2/17) at 4:30PM sponsored by the Buffalo Chamber Music Society as part of the Gift to the Community Series.

English organist David Rodgers is in recital Saturday (2/16) at University Presbyterian Church at the corner of Main and Niagara Falls Boulevard, before traveling to First Baptist Church in Niagara Falls Sunday (2/17) at 3PM.
