Local School Officials Press Lawmakers for More Aid

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – Members of the State Legislature's Western New York delegation met with local school officials Saturday about education spending in the coming year.

Governor Pataki's proposed budget holds the line on school aid for the fiscal year that starts April 1st.

The Erie County Association of School Boards presented a resolution to the lawmakers that its executive director Jackie Paone says asks for three things.

"Our board members have signed a resolution affirming our right to expect from the state adequate funding to meet the New York State learning standards," Paone said. "We also ask them to approve a new state budget on a timely basis so that local school districts know how much in state aid they'll be receiving before their budgets are drawn up. We also seek flexibility to determine the use of those funds on a local basis."

About 150 school board members, school superintendents and other educators were on hand to discuss their needs with the local legislators. Mark A. Scott News Director WBFO 88.7FM Buffalo, NY Telephone: (716) 829-2788 mscott@wbfo.org http://wbfo.org
