Silver Endorses McCall for Governor

By Mark Scott

Albany, NY – State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver announced Monday he's backing H. Carl McCall's run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Silver gives some considerable clout to the state comptroller's campaign. The speaker is the most powerful Democrat in the Legislature. Silver said McCall is a proven vote-getter.

"In 1998, Carl McCall won re-election as comptroller by receiving more votes than any other statewide candidate, including the current governor," Silver said.

McCall is battling Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Governor George Pataki's expected bid for a third term.
