Erie County Wind Ensemble, JoAnn Falletta Come to WBFO
It's a busy week for classical music on WBFO.By Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – Several new compositions will be heard throughout Western New York this week.
The Erie County Wind Ensemble returns to WBFO's Allen Hall Auditorium Friday (2/1) at 8PM with Music Director John Maguda on the podium. All four dozen musicians will repeat a program they gave last Friday at the Convention Center downtown for the annual conference of the Erie County Music Educators, including this piece for cello and orchestra called Casa Nova. And John Maguda says there are many music teachers in the group.
See John Maguda lead the Erie County Wind Ensemble for free, Friday (2/1) at 8PM in Allen Hall on UB's Main Street Campus. I'll be your host. And if you can't make it in person, then turn on WBFO for a live broadcast.
Now, how would you like to speak with the Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, JoAnn Falletta? Well, WBFO will give you that opportunity Wednesday afternoon at three with a special Talk of Buffalo. And I'll be your host for that as well.
Then on Friday (2/1) at 7:30PM and Saturday (2/2) at 8PM, JoAnn will lead the orchestra in Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony and the second performance of a new Piano Concerto for the Left Hand by composer Daren Hagen based upon the Seven Last Words of Christ. He wrote the piece for the orchestra's featured soloist Gary Grafman, who injured his right hand back in 1979.
Also this week, several Philharmonic members present the annual Mozart Birthday celebration at the Lancaster Opera House Monday (1/28) at 8PM, before BPO Clarinetist John Fullam is in recital with Pianist Nancy Townsend Tuesday (1/29) at 8PM in UB's Slee Hall. A work by local composer Persis Parshall Vehar is on the program.
And the London City Opera present Lehar's The Merry Widow Wednesday at eight in Shea's.
And that's Music Notes. I'm Bill Raffel. Have a great week!
