In De Beginnin’ is Oscar Brown, Jr.’s brilliant musical presentation of the first chapters of Genesis in verse. The score, a fusion of gospel and R&B, was written in collaboration with his son, Oscar “Bobo” Brown III. Ujima had the immense pleasure of producing In De Beginnin’, under Oscar’s direction and Bobo’s musical direction, in 1989. In De Beginnin’ features The Lawd who is a lady, a likable fellow named Adam, a pretty and defiant Eve and the smooth-talking Debil – backed up by an eloquent preacher and soulful choir.

When the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences was formed in 1861, its members and friends donated interesting items collected over time and travel such as sea shells, interesting rocks and other natural specimens, and stored them in what is referred to as “Cabinets of Curiosities”. Since then, the contents of those cabinets have grown exponentially into the collection of over 600,000 specimens and artifacts on display at the Buffalo Museum of Science and shared with other museums around the world.

They manage to elude the authorities and eventually stumble upon an abandoned boxcar that they fashion into their new home. Pursued by the authorities and a mysterious stranger, the children discover the rewards and perils of life on the run, as well as the joy of keeping their family together.

Khaled Hosseini is the author of the international best-selling novel and UB Reads 2008 selection, The Kite Runner. The first novel by an Afghan author to be published in English, The Kite Runner reminds readers in this post 9/11 world that in our humanity, we all share and relate to common emotions and experiences that transcend cultural divides and stereotypes. Consequently, the US Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees named Khaled Hosseini the 2006 Humanitarian of the Year.

Bird with Strings: Tribute to Charlie Parker

This concert is an historical reconstruction of the landmark 1950 Clef recording "Charlie Parker with Strings," utilizing the original session arrangements written by Jimmy Carroll and Joe Lipman for the great Charlie Parker, also known by generations of jazz fans as Bird.
With the discovery of the original parts, Canadian saxophonist Darcy Hepner will perform lush and romantic interpretations of beloved jazz standards. Also performing: Tony Caramia on piano; John Bacon on drums; SUNY Fredonia Chamber Jazz Ensemble; Bruce Johnstone, Music Director. Audiences will experience the elegance and warmth of this beautiful, timeless and engaging music!

A New stART
Asbury Hall, Babeville

A New stART is the first collaboration between the FJC and Artspace. The title of the event honors the courage and resilience of survivors of domestic violence. The artwork will focus on uplifting and hopeful imagery, the possibility of change, inner strength and courage and the way forward. The Family Justice Center will also be presenting two awards at A New stART. The Susan Still Award will be given to a resident of Erie County who has dedicated his/her career to serving and advocating for victims of domestic/intimate partner violence and their families. The Buffalo News Founders Award will honor an individual or organization that has demonstrated innovation in the creation and delivery of services for victims or education/outreach programs for the general public.
