About Joyce Kryszak

Joyce KryszakJoyce Kryszak is the News and Cultural Affairs Editor for WBFO, covering an array of social issues that impact the Western New York community. In short, the award-winning reporter tells stories about people... who they are, what they do, why, and why it matters.

Joyce attended Purdue University and completed her degree at SUNY Buffalo in the Honors Program, graduating summa cum laude in 1999 with a BA special major degree in journalism.   The rigorous program gave Joyce an extensive background in all areas necessary for in-depth and investigative reporting.  Joyce has exposed: corruption in political campaign fundraising, hidden predatory lending practices, deadly flaws in the 911 emergency communications system, and racial disparities in health care and funding.  She regularly examines issues of poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, the impact of religion on society among other urgent social problems.

Joyce began her career as a print journalist, working for ten years as a free-lance correspondent for the Buffalo News, reporting on municipal and school government.  Joyce’s broadcast career began at WBFO in 1999 when she “fell in love with radio at first sound," realizing the tremendous impact of telling stories through the harmony of words and sound.

Since joining the WBFO News team Joyce has won nearly three dozen Associated Press awards for a variety of hard news and feature reports. For her reporting in 2008 Joyce won more individual AP awards than any other broadcast reporter in New York State.  She also has been honored by the New York State Broadcasters Association and was given the Media Award from the Erie County Coalition Against Family Violence.

Joyce and her husband Alan, who is a composer, technology administrator and teacher, live in Kenmore with Joyce’s mother and their goofy Bernese Mountain dog Tartan.  The couple enjoys spending time with their adult children Bryan, David, Faherty, Kyle and Neil, and with their three grandchildren, Acelynde, Bryan Jr., and Ayden.   Joyce’s family is her favorite pastime.  But she also enjoys song writing, reading, gardening, hiking and birding.  She also is an active board member for the Family Justice Center of Erie County.

You can send Joyce an e-mail message at jkryszak@wbfo.org. Her direct line is (716) 829-5779.
