The Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts Seeks Artists & Performers. The 11th Annual festival, on August 28th and 29th, is seeking Artists and Craftspeople to apply to its juried 2010 Artist’s Market. The application deadline is March 27th. The Festival is also seeking performers in dance, music, theater and more to fill its 4 stages. July 1st deadline for performers. Junior Achievement of WNY seeks classroom volunteers to teach K-12 students about business and the importance of staying in school! JA programs correlate with the NYS Learning Standards and focus on entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness. Volunteer are provided with lesson plans, materials and training. The time commitment is minimal – about an hour a week for five, six or seven weeks depending on the grade level. Volunteers choose the school and age level of their placement. Saturday, March 13th: Come watch the Duquesne University Tamburitzans present their exciting show of Eastern European song, music, and dance at 7pm at Hilbert College. Footwork is articulated in hundreds of styles and songs are performed in many languages and dialects. The Eastern European hand-made costumes are historically accurate, vibrant and beautiful. March 15-16: David Ireland's Everything Between Us, a play directed by Kathleen Akerley. Monday, March 15:  The Jewelry Show. Local jewelry artists will participate in a one day only show and sale. All artists create handmade pieces that are unique and one of a kind. A portion of the proceeds benefit Gilda's Club WNY, a cancer support community for those living with cancer, their families and friends. Tuesday, March 16th:  Living Wage Forum.  Large numbers of public school workers still earn poverty wages. The Buffalo Public School Board has passed a resolution calling for a living wage policy, but the bus aides and food service workers have yet to see progress on it. Lou Jean Fleron, PPG co-director and chair of Buffalo’s Living Wage Commission, will discuss the issue with Betty Martin, President of the Transportation Aides of Buffalo. All six Buffalo School Board members up for re-election this spring have also been invited to participate and Lou Petrucci, Park District Board Member,has confirmed. Thursday, March 18th: Diva by Diva, A Celebration of Women at Hilbert College.  Presented by O’Connell and Company Productions, Inc. at 7:30 pm  in the William Swan Auditorium, 5200 South Park Ave., Hamburg. Doors will open at 6:30 and feature free refreshments, theme basket raffles, and a free door prize. Performance seating will begin at 7:15. Tickets are $25.  Saturday, March 20th: 16th Annual Fabulous Feast, a fundraiser for Shakespeare in Delaware Park. Enjoy a scrumptious Elizabethan-style banquet with 5 courses of food and drink, from 6 to 10:30pm at Buffalo’s own medieval castle, the Connecticut Street Armory. You’ll enjoy Shakespearean characters galore, jugglers, sword fights, and bagpipes, and the Theresa Quinn Band. Also: 3 royal auctions, silent, fishbowl and live, with special guest auctioneer WBFO’s Bert Gambini. Tickets are $65 members, $75 nonmembers. Corporate tables are available.  Wednesday. March 24: Health Sciences Charter School Open House, 5:30-7:30 pm at Sheridan Parkside Community Center Auditorium, 169 Sheridan Parkside Dr., Tonawanda.  Beginning with a class of incoming 9th graders, a new charter school will open on August 18, offering specialized curricula and school-to-work internships with area health care providers. The school is open to students throughout WNY. Tuition is free. NYS Regents or Advanced Regents diplomas, and AP courses will be offered.  Monday, April 5th: 4th Annual Dyngus Day Parade. Buffalo's Premiere Dyngus Day Celebration in the historic Polonia District in Buffalo. It highlights many Official Festival Halls where the Dyngus Day celebration and merry making will be in full swing. Starts at 5pm at the Corpus Christi Church, 199 Clark St. & ends at the Memorial in front of Buffalo's Central Terminal. Free for most venues.  Saturday, April 17: St. Martin de Porres Church 1st Annual Basket & Silent Auction at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center at 6pm. Tickets for the event are $50 per person and can be purchased beginning March 1st. Donation of auction items are currently being accepted now through March 21st. This after 5 affair will include hors d'oeuvres, live music by The Love Supreme Jazz Ensemble, and a cash bar. Ticket price includes a chance at the Door Prize and 25 chances at Basket Auction Items.  Monday, April 19th-23rd: Children speech enhancement program called "Spring into Speech." Each class will have an emphasis on promoting speech and language skills through activities--story, motor development, cooking and singing. Vocabulary building & positive social communication.
