Amherst Players proudly presents "A Mother In My Head" by Christopher L. King, Wednesday, August 18th at 7:00 PM at the Maryvale Senior Center, 100 Moorman Drive, Cheektowaga, NY 14225. Tickets are $10 at the door. Where does motherly advice and direction begin and where does it end? Or does it ever end? This witty and fast-paced play follows the lives of two young people as they begin their careers, meet, and fall in love, each coached every step of the way by the "mothers in their heads." Free Wednesdays at the Carousel Museum, starting June 30th. Local businesses have generously agreed to offer free admission to the museum each Wednesday afternoon from Noon - 4 PM throughout the 2010 summer season. (Visitors are still required to purchase ride tokens for 50 cents to ride the carousels.) Additional sponsors are still needed to extend the free Wednesday schedule further into the season. Friday, August 27th through Sunday, August 29th: Overgrown Music and Art festival is a 3 stages 3 days festival at the Allegany County Fairgrounds, Angelica NY, with more than 30 bands, vendors and activities for the entire family, Tickets available at www.overgrown.us for $40.00 or $50.00 at the gate for a weekend pass. Learn about stars, planets, and galaxies during this season’s public sky shows Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons now through August 28th. “The View From Down Under: Stars of the Southern Hemisphere” is presented Fridays at 7:30 pm and Saturdays at 1:30 pm. “The View From Buffalo: Summer Skies from Your Back Yard” is presented Fridays at 8:30 pm and Saturdays at 2:30 pm. Sunday, August 15th: Carly’s Crossing 2010. It's an annual open-water swim event on at Gallagher Beach in Buffalo’s Boat Harbor. The event features 3 different courses for swimmers to participate in – the 600-yard swim, the 1-mile swim, and the 1-mile timed swim. Proceeds from the event benefit Carly’s Club, which supports pediatric cancer research and support programs at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. You do not have to be a swimmer to participate in the event – you can volunteer or just come out for the party on-land! Friday, August 6th: Silent auction presented by Save the Towers/Insomniac Party at Club W at 8 PM to benefit the Richardson Towers. Minimum donation of $10 is required for admission. At 10:30 all the gift baskets will be moved out of the way for a night of dancing. We will be featuring Buffalo's best DJ's from the local dance parties. Saturday, August 14th: 4th annual Motorcycle Ride for the Homeless presented by Buffalo City Mission. This year the run will start and end at the Mission on 100 E Tupper St. in downtown Buffalo. The run will feature live music, chicken barbeque, biker auction, award ceremony and an historical run through the city. This is a family friendly event. Saturday, September 18th: 4th Annual Buffalo Out of the Darkness Community Walk to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at Delaware Park North (by Zoo), a walk for those who have been touched by suicide and mental health illness. Proceeds will benefit local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs. Registration will begin at the park at 8:30am. The walk will begin at 10am. Wednesday, July 28th: Free public education seminar presented by the NYS Department of Health/NYS Partnership for Long-Term Care at the Marriott Buffalo/Niagara Hotel at 1340 Millersport Highway, between 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
The seminar focuses on long-term care options for New York State residents: how to be ready when the time comes, how to protect your assets and still get the care you need, how to make sure you have the right kind of coverage and the right amount. There is no cost for attendance and no product solicitation of any kind, just useful information. Whether you have family approaching possible care age or you want to protect your own independence in the future, this is the seminar for you. CurbSide Croft, the all-natural urban farm on Buffalo’s West Side, is back for its second season. The philosophy is the same – provide organically grown produce to the immediate neighborhood with a focus on varietals specific to cultural cuisines of West Side community members – but the hours are expanded! Stop by the corner of West Ave. and Vermont St. Monday through Friday 3–6 p.m. and Saturdays 12–3 p.m. for fresh, picked-to-order produce. Cash and food stamps accepted. Don’t forget to support the sustainable operation by bringing your own bag.
