Joyce began her college career as a journalism student at Purdue University in 1984. After raising her family, Joyce completed her degree at UB in the Honors Program, graduating summa cum laude in 1999, with a BA special major degree in Journalism. The rigorous program gave Joyce an extensive background in the many areas necessary for thorough reporting - political science, public affairs, communications, the arts and humanities.
Since joining the WBFO News team in 1999, Joyce has won numerous Associated Press awards for a variety of hard news and feature reports. She also regularly produces spot news for National Public Radio and in-depth features for other broadcast news services, such as the Great Lakes Radio Consortium, Voice of America, and Independent Native News. A series of radio documentaries Joyce produced for the New York Folklore Society was distributed for use in the New York State Schools curriculum.
In addition to her broadcast work, Joyce also continues a ten-year career as a print journalist. As a freelance correspondent for the Buffalo News, she has covered municipal and school issues in several areas, from Cheektowaga to Alden. As a freelance writer, Joyce has written essays on Domestic Violence and is currently writing a book on the subject. She is a member of the Erie County Coalition Against Family Violence.
The written and spoken word also meld for Joyce's other passions, songwriting and singing. She has performed her own music locally, and in other productions on stages in New York City and at Duke University.
Joyce and her husband Alan, who is a composer, computer technician and teacher, live in Kenmore with their children, Faherty, Kyle and Neil, and Joyce's mother. Joyce also has two adult sons, David and Bryan, a daughter-in-law Sandra, and three grandchildren, Acelynde and Bryan Jr., and Ayden. Joyce's family is her favorite pastime.
